It was an interesting start to Katie’s career at Johnson Christian Village. The newly hired lifestyle coordinator had barely stepped into her job when senior living communities across the country began preparing for the spread of Covid-19.
Where normally, she would be directing recreational activities, organizing musical events and leading outings, Katie was now adapting her work to comply with social distancing and safety guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control. “We always have our masks and gloves on so that we’re prepared for the situation,” she says.
So what’s a typical day for Katie and her team now? “During the pandemic, there really is no typical day,” says Katie. “It all depends on what the residents need. We’re making sure that their daily mental, physical and spiritual needs are met on a more personal level. It’s a lot about playing cards, reminiscing. I love hearing about the way people grew up, their stories and their families.”
It remains a rewarding job for Katie. Actually, it’s much more than “a job,” she says. “It honestly doesn’t feel like I’m going into work,” Katie observes. “I enjoy the interactions so much. It feels like I’m taking care of family.”
Welcome to the family, Katie!
